Health and PE an "easy major"?

When someone asks you what your major is, do they laugh when they hear Health and PE? I have a 3.9 QPA, and it is always attributed by my peers to my major being "easy." Is creating a 10-lesson Unit plan that is 135 pages long easy? Is traveling to high schools to teach lessons on HIV/AIDS to seniors in high school a routine thing to do? Maybe we are not required to solve complex mathematical equations or breakdown how a molecule creates and uses energy, but it could be stated that the learned art of instructing is an equally as difficult a skill. I've had friends that could pass Calculus 3, but the idea of standing in front of 30 children sends a shiver down their spine. When thinking about if Health and PE as a major, consider all that it encompasses. This major is certainly no walk in the park!

Outdoor classes at a College Level

The weather is getting nicer and a trend is starting to appear to me. Not just Phys. Ed. classes, but other classes in different disciplines are starting to hold lectures outside. The premise is very understandable, as giving the students an escape from the tension that is related to the classroom by lecturing outside seems to be a way to help students retain knowledge better. I wonder if the teachers that do this have seen phys. ed. classes outside and then shoose to do this or if they think of the idea on their own. It is about time, i think, that our discipline has a significant bearing on other teachers in different subject areas as well.

Health and PE attendance policy at SRU

A currently pressing issue to me is the requirement to attend class in the Health and PE major and getting graded for it. I was under the impression that one is assessed on retention of subject matter, not sitting in class. If student's skip class, then they will suffer by not being presented the material that is handed out and discussed that day. This way the grade suffers because they do poorly on a test because they were absent and did not learn the material. Now, if one misses class and meets with the teacher to discuss the reasoning and gain that material, I believe this is excuseable. Today I suffered another concussion and cannot even conceive paying attention for an entire class, especially since I am not permitted to sleep or take pain medication yet. However, I still have to go so I do not lose points.

Sru Men's Soccer- Funding

Economic times are truly tough at SRU. On Tuesday, our team traveled to play the Pittsburgh Riverhounds at Deer Lakes High School, which is about an hour away. However, we were denied a bus, and even vans becasue of the expense. Therefore, the players themselves had to drive to the game, hoping for reimbursement for expense from our fundraising account, not from the University for which we won the PSAC this year and have finished in the top 20 in the country 2 years in a row. Frustrating, as we see teams we are competing against who are private and state schools alike, with larger budgets and funding.
